  1. Desiderius Erasmus (1466¬≠1536) was a Dutch writer, theologian, and 
  2. scholar. Erasmus is regarded as northern Europe‚Äôs greatest Renaissance 
  3. intellectual. Called the ‚Äúfather of the Reformation,‚Äù Erasmus did not 
  4. support Martin Luther‚Äôs reforms and wrote several tracts attacking 
  5. him. Though he would remain a Roman Catholic all his life, Erasmus was 
  6. extremely critical of corrupt church practices and rationalist 
  7. Scholasticism. In his 1509 satire, The Praise of Folie  (dedicated to 
  8. Thomas More), Erasmus called for a return to simple Christian ethics.
